Ageispolis was the ambient electronic project helmed by WCR-founder Bryan Hopton. Initially, the project was split between dark ambient techno and more abrasive sounds, but it wasn't long before it was split into two separate aliases, the harsher material becoming the fodder for what would become Brother Rat. Ageispolis' first release came in 2005, as the first new release on the Brother Rat Recordings imprint (the first two were reissues of old Grave Robbers From Space! recordings). The Critical Error EP gathered up the tracks that Ageispolis had released up to that point through his Acid Planet profile, and was met with warm response, and a few positive reviews. About a year later, in 2006, Ageispolis released the Interlude# EP, a collection of short, minimalist ambient pieces. The EP was a departure from the earlier, beat-based material Ageispolis had released up until that point. For two years, Ageispolis seemed to disappear from the WCR radar. The label underwent various changes, including the name change from Brother Rat Recordings to Wolf's Clothing Records, and every time we went over the list of upcoming releases, The elusive "Ageispolis - Barton" would always pop up. Finally, after two years of toiling, recording, re-recording, deleting sessions, deleting entire albums and generally babying the project, Ageispolis released the Barton EP. The EP's densely processed piano intro was a dim, bleak sign of things to come for the project, but the EP was a complete departure from anything Ageispolis had done up to that point. Drawing from sources like hip hop, Boards Of Canada, Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, and others, Ageispolis crafted a short batch of songs that was alternately beautiful and disturbing. Immediately after releasing the EP, Ageispolis announced that the project was over, and nothing more has been heard from him. He has said, however, that there is a chance he will record under that name again some day. |
